Greg Taylor’s Celtic future still hangs in the balance as the Scotland defender edges ever closer to entering the last six months of his deal.
Taylor was a hero and villain in Celtic’s League Cup win after he was at fault for Rangers’ opener but redeemed himself in the second half with the Hoops equaliser.
Brendan Rodgers has been urged to deal in the Celtic defender by former Hoops hero Chris Sutton but, as yet, there has been no contract signed.
The Celtic boss has admitted that Taylor’s contract is a ‘priority’ at the club but with less than thirteen days to go until the Scotland fullback can start speaking to other clubs, the Parkhead support will be watching how this develops over the next two weeks closely.
However, Peter Grant has another theory on why Taylor is yet to extend his Celtic stay and it’s all got to do with Arsenal defender, Kieran Tierney.
Peter Grant says Celtic’s Greg Taylor continues to answer his critics
Grant told The Go Radio Football Show [31m], “Listen, I’ve been really impressed with Greg [Taylor] and how he’s been going about his business and everything.
“Everybody’s always questioning him. He’s come up with the goods. I know on Sunday he made an error and showed a bit of character to get the shot away for the goal.
“Obviously, he needed a little bit of fortune. But I think he’s played the position exceptionally well, because it’s really difficult, it’s not just like your overlapped fullback nowadays.”
Peter Grant says ‘maybe Celtic are looking at the Kieran Tierney situation’
“And maybe the other side of it is,” continued Grant, “Maybe Celtic are looking at the Kieran Tierney situation.
“So if Alex Valle goes back [to Barcelona], Greg doesn’t sign his new contract, Kieran’s available when he comes back to Celtic. So maybe that’s a situation that’s getting mooted there. You never know how it’s working.
“But I, for one, hope that Greg stays. Now listen, Valle would be pushing him all the way if he decided to stay, because he’s got the talent as well. I think he’s a very, very good player and I think he will only get better.
“So he would push them all the way. So if that was the two fullbacks even getting into next season, I’d be comfortable with that.”
Celtic fans have expressed their feelings on Kieran Tierney’s possible return to Parkhead with many saying they would welcome the deal but only if the Premier League defender improved his fitness.
Arsenal supporters are swaying over Tierney’s future at the club with many unhappy at the former Celtic man being ignored by Mikael Arteta and others wanting the Scotland star to be given a chance.
One thing is for sure if the opportunity presented itself, Kieran Tierney would love to return to Celtic. The stumbling block would be his massive Arsenal salary.
If Celtic could get him back, even on loan, whether that would spell the end of Taylor’s Parkhead career or not remains to be seen but there are still many Hoops supporters who would love to see him stay at the club.
