Ange Postecoglou has issued an update on long-term absentee Christopher Jullien.

Jullien injured himself clearing the ball from the goal-line against Dundee United at the end of 2020 [BBC]. He had only just returned from an enforced absence.

Postecoglou said that Jullien was still rehabbing his injured right knee, and needs “a couple of months” more to recover [STV]. That’s a significant blow for Celtic, who would’ve hoped for the Frenchman to return sooner.

Jullien has spent months in France working on his recovery. The centre-back shared updates from Clairefontaine, the home base of French football. The big centre-back had hoped to be involved in Celtic’s pre-season training [Celtic FC], but his absence has been felt keenly by the club.

Especially with the Bhoys in the midst of a defensive crisis. Young heads like Dane Murray have been entrusted with stepping up for the Bhoys in European competition.

The time is now for Celtic to land Kristijan Lovrić and Aurelio Buta

“We’re such a young group at the moment. You look at our back four, potentially, and there’s not a player over 24 years of age, I think.

“And I would hate to think how many appearances between the four of them.”

A significant blow for Celtic as Christopher Jullien remains a long way from return

No doubt, Postecoglou would’ve loved to have the experience and physical presence of Christopher Jullien available.

The Frenchman barely featured in 20-21. He played in nine Premiership games for Celtic, and the Bhoys kept clean sheets in six [Transfermarkt]. Having been struck with a long-term back injury, he had barely got going again before his knee collided with a Celtic Park post.

It did allow Stephen Welsh to make his impact for the Bhoys. Now, Welsh is the most experienced centre-back Celtic have available, until Carl Starfelt can get going in a Hoops jersey.

A big physical presence, Jullien would surely have contributed in the early parts of Postecoglou’s time at Celtic. As it is, we’re looking towards the late Autumn before we see him lining up for the Bhoys again.
