Referee appointed for Celtic vs Aberdeen will take charge of his first ever Scottish Cup final, VAR also confirmed

There’s only one week to go until Celtic take to the field at Hampden Park against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final.

Celtic are the current holders having beaten Rangers 1-0 last year as Adam Idah’s dramatic late winner sparked jubilant scenes in Mount Florida.

That was the Bhoys’ 42nd success in the competition, and they’ll be doing everything to make it a record-extending 43 on May 24.

The Scottish Cup final will be a huge occasion not only for the players, staff and fans of both teams, but also the refereeing officials.

The pressure to deliver the right decisions is huge and only the most experienced referees are handed the honour of taking charge of the game.

Don Robertson to officiate 2025 Scottish Cup final

That man this year will be Don Robertson, who has been selected by the SFA to officiate proceedings in the south east of Glasgow.

It will be the first ever time the 38-year-old has taken charge of a Scottish Cup final, despite the years of experience he holds.

The VAR for the final is Greg Aitken, who became one of the first full-time VAR officials – alongside Andrew Dallas – for the SFA back in August 2023.

Running the lines will be Ross Macleod and David Dunne, while Colin Steven has been tasked with the fourth official duties on the day.

Robertson’s refereeing record involving Celtic

Robertson is a Glaswegian and has vast experience refereeing games involving the four-time Premiership champions and two-time defending Scottish Cup holders Celtic.

All in all, Robertson has been in charge of 44 Celtic matches. He’s only officiated more games involving Rangers, currently 54 matches.

Celtic have won 37 of those 44 games, drawing four and losing three. 35 yellow cards have been dished out and two red cards, while Robertson has awarded a total of eight penalty kicks to the Bhoys.

He was the referee for last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final win over Aberdeen and took charge of the Glasgow derby at Ibrox in January.
