As we enter the second week of Celtic searching for a new manager, the Celtic fans can brace themselves for more intense speculation if the following report from the Daily Mail is anything to go by.

According to Stephen McGowan, Brendan Rodgers and Celtic have spoken face-to-face about a possible return to Parkhead as manager.

On Saturday, the Chief Executive Michael Nicholson and the Director of Finance, Chris McKay took a private plane to Mallorca, where Rodgers is currently based.

Following his release from Leicester City in April, it was reported that Rodgers intended to take a break from football. However, as discussed on 67 Hail Hail yesterday, those reports seemed premature as the former Celtic manager had never ruled out a return to Celtic.

The report says Rodgers has qualms about coming back to Celtic. The way he left in February 2019 still stings for many fans. However, he still has the backing of the club’s largest shareholder, Dermot Desmond.

McGowan also says Rodgers is currently assessing the benefits and drawbacks of a second term in Glasgow ahead of more talks this week.

There is no doubt that the re-appointment of Brendan Rodgers will be a controversial one if it does go ahead. And they don’t come as high-profile as the former Celtic boss.

As I said earlier, the way he left the club to join Leicester City has not been forgotten by a lot of fans but there is also a section of the Celtic support that would welcome a Brendan Rodgers return.

Let’s face the facts, Rodgers is an excellent coach. He brought a style of football to Celtic that the fans loved and he delivered two trebles, with a third almost in the bag and his Invincibles season will long live in the memory of the Celtic support.

What this report also says to me is that the Celtic board are looking to fill the position sooner rather than later. Flying out two of your top boardroom executives to speak to a potential candidate in person is a testament to that. And you can be sure of one thing now, they are serious about Rodgers.
