Celtic defender Christopher Jullien is reportedly still in talks with German Bundesliga side Schalke.

The 29-year-old looked all set to depart Parkhead in recent days after travelling to Germany to complete a medical with the recently promoted side.

However, reports on Thursday stated that the player and club couldn’t come to an agreement over terms, and Jullien was headed back to Glasgow.

Despite returning to Celtic, the central defender’s future with the club is still expected to be elsewhere, with interest from both Germany and France.

Jullien made just one appearance under Ange Postecoglou last season in a 16-minute cameo against Raith Rovers.

Just a matter of days into pre-season, the Celtic manager has made it clear that the Frenchman is no longer part of his plans and would be moved on this summer.

Although talks broke down between Jullien and Schalke, a deal that would see the defender move to Germany doesn’t appear to be completely off the table.

According to French journalist Marc Mechenoua, the former Toulouse man remains in talks with the Bundesliga side, and a move hasn’t been ruled out just yet.

The sooner the move for Jullien, the better for all parties.

The Frenchman made a fantastic start to life at Celtic during his first season here, playing a huge part in the 2019/20 title-winning side.

However, injury issues have very much hampered Jullien’s progress at Celtic, suffering from two serious knocks.

Now that it is clear he isn’t part of the plans next season and is also approaching the final 12 months of his contract here, the best thing for all parties to do, is to move on.

Preferably as soon as possible because that would allow Jullien to get a full pre-season with his new club, and Postecoglou will be able to pursue other options.

Hopefully, Jullien’s future can be sorted out in the coming days or weeks. A move to Schalke may be the defender’s preferred destination, as talks continue.
