Danish side FC Midtjylland have made an ambitious approach to sign Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis, according to reports in Denmark.

The Greek striker is believed to be considering his future at Parkhead after talks of a new contract broke down between the player’s representatives and the club.

Reports have suggested that Giakoumakis would still be open to remaining at Celtic Park. But clubs from across the globe are monitoring the situation.

And according to reports from Danish media outlet B.T., FC Midtjylland appears to be one of the first clubs to make a transfer approach for the striker.

The report states that the Europa League side are in the hunt for a new number nine and has approached Celtic ‘with a view to sign’ the Greece international.

But they are well aware of the forward’s recent goal-scoring exploits for the Hoops and therefore acknowledge that it will be a big challenge to prize Giakoumakis to Denmark.

It is certainly an ambitious move from the Hoops’ former Champions League foes, who we came up against in the first round of qualifying last campaign.

But they do have cash in the bank, having recently sold Brazilian midfielder Evander to MLS side Portland Timbers for €10 million [Daily Mail].

So, it will be interesting to see how far the Danish side’s interest goes as they reportedly eye up a potential January move for the Celtic man.

A move to Midtjylland feels unlikely for Giakoumakis

Although the striker may be slightly disappointed with his game time, after a recent breakdown in contract talks, a move to Midtjylland feels unlikely.

The Danish side appears to be going into negotiations well aware of the difficult task they face if they hope to bring the Celtic striker to the club.

Having just come off the back of his first real involvement in the UEFA Champions League, you would expect that Giakoumakis would either remain in Glasgow or be holding out for other offers.

His future is certainly up in the air at this moment in time, with Kyogo looking like the standout first-choice striker at Parkhead.

But a move to the Danish league this window feels unlikely in my opinion, with plenty of clubs likely to be watching the striker closely.

As mentioned, there is still every chance that we will see the former VVV-Venlo man remain at Parkhead past this month.

And if interest does arrive from elsewhere, then Celtic are in a good position to negotiate any deal, with Giakoumakis’ current deal at the club running until 2026.
