’Scary’ – Scott Brown makes Jeffrey Schlupp and Greg Taylor claim at Celtic

There could be a lot of change to Celtic’s fullback spot in the summer.

As of this moment, Brendan Rodgers has the right-back spots filled, but he will only have one left-back to choose from for next season.

Kieran Tierney will return to Celtic in the summer when his Arsenal contract expires and it has excited the entire fanbase.

But, Jeffrey Schlupp’s loan spell will end and Greg Taylor’s contract will expire in the summer – neither have, as of yet, extended their stays at Celtic Park.

It also needs to be remembered that Rodgers’ side will have to qualify for next season’s Champions League, so it’s the return of those early games before the season kicks off.

Many supporters would want Schlupp, given that he is now the starting left-back, to stay on because he would solve a lot of problems and he now has a fan in Scott Brown.

Scott Brown hails Celtic’s ’scary’ fullback options

Taylor has divided opinion with the Celtic fanbase this season and Rodgers even came out to publicly defend the player.

But Brown labeled Taylor as ‘fantastic’, alongside Schlupp, who he feels has settled in quite brilliantly at the club.

The legendary midfielder also lauded the quality Rodgers has to choose from in those positions, as he told Premier Sports (09/03/25 at 2:40 pm).

“His pace, his quality, going forward and scoring goals as well, obviously helps,” said Brown.

“He has taken to the shape and style of Brendan. Of course, Brendan knows him from down the road and understands his game plan and what he wants to do.

“You have two fantastic left-backs now that are competing for places. That’s what Brendan wants. He wants two players in every position, to make sure that if you do drop form for a few weeks, here and there, then you never know what can happen.

“Schlupp comes in and he has been fantastic for Celtic so far. It’s pace and quality as well. That’s what’s scary about Celtic. You look at the two fullbacks. Pace and power. They can get up and down the line for 90 minutes, then, if they are struggling, you bring another on, which is exceptional too.”

The point Celtic fans will make is that Schlupp has looked far better than Taylor, and that over a short period of time and when he isn’t up to full speed.

The 32-year-old has looked at home and you can’t fault many of the performances he has produced.

All of this raises the question, if he has a pre-season under his belt, comes back next season, and with Tierney on board, then it makes Celtic far stronger in that position.

Yes, Schlupp, and his age, isn’t the type of deal that the club usually go down, but this is proof that it should be done.
