Former Celtic captain Scott Brown has made his first signing as Fleetwood Town boss, bringing St Johnstone defender Shaun Rooney to the club.

Rooney spent two seasons in the Scottish top flight with the Saints, enjoying mixed success which included a cup double last season.

His last action with the Perth side was scoring in the 4-0 play-off final win over his former side Inverness, which kept St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

Just two days later, though, the 25-year old has moved on from McDiarmid Park, joining up with the legendary Celtic captain as his first signing in management.

St Johnstone were also very keen to see Rooney, who scored in both of their cup final victories last campaign, sign a new deal.

However, the lure of working with the Celtic legend appears to have had the most pull for Rooney at this stage of his career, as he agreed a two-year deal to join Brown at Fleetwood.

Rooney is a well known Celtic supporter, as we have discussed on the site before.

Brown has his eye on Scottish Premiership targets

Having only just recently retired from the game, it is an exciting opportunity for Brown to get his first managerial role with the English League One side.

The 36-year old has got to work straight away, and it is a real statement of intent signing Shaun Rooney, who was one of St Johnstone’s top performers during his time there.

You would imagine this won’t be Brown’s last dive into the Scottish Premiership market for players, with his knowledge of the game up here.

It will be extremely interesting to see how his squad takes shape as the window goes on.
