Somehow, Scott McTominay’s overhead kick for Scotland has been overshadowed.
When McTominay flew in the air to open the scoring in Scotland’s must-win World Cup qualifier against Denmark on Tuesday night, not many expected anything would top that.
But up stepped Celtic hero Kieran Tierney, and then Kenny McLean, who produced moments Scotland supporters will never forget.
The joy of Scotland reaching the 2026 World Cup has lifted Tierney’s status, and he deserves it after a turbulent few years.

Tierney deserves all the love that he is getting, and he is certainly getting a lot of it on social media.
When the Celtic left-back reacted on Instagram to his Scotland winner, he was lauded and applauded in the comments section of his IG post.
- McTominay had a two-word message for his fellow countryman: ‘My hero…’
- Andy Robertson just needed one word: ‘Legend 🙌🏽❤️.’
- Celtic teammate Callum Osmand: ‘Hero.’
- Oli McBurnie joked: ‘Biscuit hips 👏.’
The date Scotland and Tierney need to pencil in after World Cup dream comes true
Now, it’s time to party for Scotland fans, and a lot to look forward to for everyone involved, especially the players.
The first date to pencil in is:
- Friday, 5 December.
That’s because that is when the World Cup draw will take place in Washington DC at 17:00 GMT.
Scotland will find out their opponents, including whether they will need to land in America, Mexico or Canada. The three host nations for world football’s showpiece event.
And then, the main event itself starts:
- 11 June, 2026
And the World Cup final:
- 19 July
