Celtic’s transfer business in January has been the scope of much criticism over the past few months.
And before the Motherwell kick-off, it became the front and centre of discussion once more as Chris Sutton tells Celtic there was a glaring position that they failed to strengthen in January that could have given them the chance to ‘absolutely bury’ Rangers this season.
Sutton said [Sky Sports], “If you look at the recruitment in the summer, and the nine players which Celtic signed. The jumbled, muddled thinking, the centre half situation.
“Something hasn’t been right Celtic. [They] failed to prepare for the Champions League and ended up disappointed.
“And then in January, they weren’t ready as well. The left-back situation has been a position which has been screaming for Celtic to sign somebody.
“They haven’t done that. And I think Celtic supporters look at it like this.
“They had a chance really in the summer to absolutely bury Rangers and win the league and get the Champions League riches. That hasn’t happened.”
Indeed, there were other positions in the team that certainly need looked at but the left-back position is one that has cost Celtic points recently.
Alexandro Bernabei has been found wanting against Aberdeen and Kilmarnock and it was his two errors at Pittodrie and Celtic Park that have allowed four points to slip out of Celtic’s grasp.
There is no doubt that Brendan Rodgers will look to strengthen that area of the team come the summer. If Celtic do go on and win the title they will need that extra quality in the team for the Champions League and replace a player in Bernabei who is, clearly, not even good enough for the Scottish Premiership.
