Simon Jordan delivers home truths about Celtic to Steven Gerrard ahead of possible Rangers return

Celtic can have all the off-field troubles possible, one thing is for sure, things aren’t as bad as they are at Rangers.

After Rangers sacked Russell Martin as manager, and what an entertaining stint it was, the Ibrox club are now turning their attention to appointing a new coach.

The rumour mills suggest that Steven Gerrard could be the man to return to Scotland, as Celtic’s dominance hasn’t wavered since he departed for Aston Villa in 2021.

Gerrard did win that sole Premiership title, but that’s all he could muster up for the Gers, as Simon Jordan has sent the former midfielder a reality check ahead of possibly coming up against Celtic again.

Celtic are ‘streets ahead’ of Rangers amid possible Steven Gerrard return

The two jobs Gerrard took up after Rangers were Villa, and then a stint in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq, as Jordan stated he ‘failed’ on both occasions.

Added to that, the former Crystal Palace owner feels that, when Gerrard won the league in Scotland, Celtic ‘weren’t in the best of nick.’

And even now, Jordan thinks Celtic aren’t in a great place, yet he still feels the champions of Scotland are ‘streets ahead’ of their neighbours, as he told talkSPORT.

“Gerrard has failed in his last two opportunities to manage,” said Jordan. “He had a moment in time at Rangers. A very different Celtic, at that time, that weren’t in the best of nick.

“Okay, they aren’t in the best nick now. But they are streets ahead of Rangers still. You look at this and say, ‘what does Gerrard bring to the equation?’ It’s lazy thinking, in my view.

“There are only two teams in Scotland that win the league, so we know that. It’s not the same as playing anywhere else.

“Of course, if you go to Glasgow Rangers or Glasgow Celtic, there is only one thing you can do, which is win or fail, because nobody else can win the league. No one else does win the league.”

Gerrard’s record against Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers coached Gerrard as a player at Liverpool, and then faced him in the dugout in his first stint as Celtic boss.

Over those two spells, Rodgers has won the title in every season, and whilst Hearts are showing some life this season, it’s expected to be the same old story again.

But if Gerrard does return, how does his record against Rodgers stack up?
