Simon Jordan drops truth bombs about Steven Gerrard’s first Rangers spell, Celtic fans said it all along

Steven Gerrard could be facing Celtic once again next season.

During Gerrard’s first spell as Rangers manager, Celtic were cleaning house and picking up all the trophies, including Trebles.

To nobody’s surprise, Celtic are dominating the trophy count again, as Brendan Rodgers just missed out on the Treble after losing the Scottish Cup final to Aberdeen over the weekend at Hampden.

This comes after the Bhoys won the double, including winning the Premiership title by 17 points, and having a cigar in their mouth for the majority of that time.

But now there is talk that Rangers will re-appoint Gerrard as manager, as he tries once again to stop Celtic in their ways.

Steven Gerrard’s first spell at Rangers amid Celtic’s dominance

Gerrard was appointed Rangers boss during the summer of 2018, when Rodgers was in his first spell as manager.

Simon Jordan states that Gerrard ‘wasn’t an unprecedented success’ in Scotland, as he noted the one trophy he won during his three years at the club.

It’s something the Celtic Park faithful have been saying all along, but Rangers have been ‘clinging’ on to the fact that he stopped the ten-in-a-row, but didn’t do much around that, as Jordan told talkSPORT.

“They are clinging,” said Jordan. “Rangers, this version of Rangers that re-emerged out of the pyramid, after it was kicked out, disbanded and recreated.

“This version of Rangers had Mark Warburton, Ally McCoist, all these different managers. Then landed with Steven Gerrard.

“Steven Gerrard wasn’t an unprecedented success at Rangers. Out of the amount of tournaments he participated in, I think he won one or two. There were nine available to him, and he won the league once.

“Of course, it’s the one that they wanted. They will cling to this. The fact of the matter is, that Gerrard, the one you (Jim White) interviewed five years ago, is probably not the same Steven Gerrard that lives in his skin now.

“He got his backside handed to him at Aston Villa. Unai Emery came in and made a fist of it instantaneously. He has gone to the Middle East for money, and he hasn’t set the place on fire there.”

How many trophies did Celtic win during Gerrard’s time at Ibrox?

Rodgers has seen off many managers during his time in Glasgow, including two within the space of six months.

Philippe Clement was sacked as manager in February, and then his interim, Barry Ferguson, made little difference before heading towards the exit door when the season was done and dusted.

Nonetheless, this is how the trophy count fared in Scotland, between Celtic and Rangers, during Gerrard’s spell in charge.
