Snooker icon John Higgins shares if Celtic can win the league with Wilfried Nancy

Wilfried Nancy has had just two games as the Celtic manager and already there are wild aspersions being made about the Frenchman.

Nancy was finally drafted in to take over from Brendan Rodgers after a delay in Celtic appointing the former MLS boss meant he had just days to prepare the team for the Hearts game.

Celtic lost to Hearts despite an impressive opening 20 minutes where it looked like Nancy had got his ideas and tactics over to the players in quick-smart time.

Quickly after that came the Roma defeat at Celtic Park and now Nancy is under immense pressure not just to win today’s Premier Sports Cup final against St Mirren, but also to keep Hearts at bay in the league.

Poll: Will Celtic win the league?

And current 2025 World Open snooker champion, and Celtic-daft John Higgins is worried as Hearts continue to show they are here for the long haul.

John Higgins says it’s ‘mental’ where Celtic find themselves this season

Celtic are currently sitting six points behind Hearts in the Scottish Premiership table albeit that the current Scottish champions have two games in hand.

But despite that, Higgins is unsure his boyhood heroes can get over the line with new Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy in charge.

Higgins told BBC Sport Scotland, “It’s just mental, isn’t it? I think it’s just the whole cloud that’s hanging over the club just now within the fighting with the board, and then you thought you’d settled down again with Martin O’Neill coming in and steadying the ship.

“Okay, maybe some of the games they weren’t great to watch, but he got them over the line, and at the end of the day, that’s what a lot of Celtic fans want.

“They want to win, and they want to win their domestic league.

“But with Nancy, I don’t know if they will win this year.”

When Celtic next play Hearts

Celtic, Hearts and Rangers all have a tough run of fixtures over the festive period but when do the Hoops next face the capital club?

The big game is sooner than Celtic supporters think as a trip to Tynecastle is booked in for Sunday the 25th of January.

That is just under six weeks away and in between, Celtic need to negotiate tough ties against Dundee United (twice), Aberdeen, Motherwell, Livingston and, of course, the New Year derby against Rangers on the 3rd of January.

With the games coming thick and fast, Nancy needs a morale-boosting win against St Mirren at Hampden to lift his players and to get the media off his back.
