Frank McAvennie forgets double title-winning boss managed Celtic, Scott Brown responds

It has been decades and decades of dominance by Celtic on the domestic stage.

From Brendan Rodgers, who is in the Celtic Park dugout right now, to Martin O’Neill, who started this current phase of trophy-winning after the turn of the century.

But it’s not just the managers who have played their part; the players have been the key ingredient behind it all, especially Celtic’s legendary midfielder Scott Brown.

Brown joined Celtic in 2007 when Gordon Strachan was in charge, and he went on to play under five different managers, winning the title, with every single one of them, and even Trebles with some.

Yes, it’s understandable if Rodgers’ Invincibles season is more legendary and memorable than others, but that shouldn’t make you forget about other campaigns.

Well, it seems as though ex-Celtic man Frank McAvennie has fallen down that hole.

Frank McAvennie has to be reminded that Ronny Deila managed Celtic

Ronny Deila was appointed Celtic manager in 2014, after Neil Lennon’s departure, including having a senior Scott Brown in the dressing room.

But when it was put to the former skipper, who managed him in Glasgow, one name was forgotten about – and that was Deila’s.

Brown quickly stated ‘you missed one’, before host Simon Houston, and McAvennie himself, tried to remember who managed the club after Lennon’s first spell.

When the now-Ayr United boss reminded them of Deila, McAvennie began to laugh, and then apologise, as he told the Let Me Be Frank Podcast.

Simon Houston stated: “You have played under some great managers at Hibs and Celtic. I was just trying to think, at Celtic it was Strachan, then Mowbray, then Neil Lennon and then Brendan Rodgers.”

Brown points up one finger and adds: “You missed one.”

McAvennie then laughs: “Martin (O’Neill)?” Brown responds: “I am not that old, you. Martin was before Strachan. He won the league.”

McAvennie then remembered: “Oh, that guy, Ronny. Sorry, Ronny.”

Brown then joked: “It looks like he made an impression on you two.”

Deila’s record at Celtic

What followed Deila was historic of the highest order, so that doesn’t help the 49-year-old, who still won the title in both of his seasons.

Yes, that penalty shootout defeat to Rangers didn’t help matters, but he did what was put in front of him, even if it was routine.

After leaving Celtic, Deila managed Vålerenga Fotball in Norway, MLS franchise New York City, including spells in Belgium at Standard Liège and Club Brugge, and then a short spell in Abu Dhabi for Al Wahda.
