‘Speedboat with no driver’ – Charlie Mulgrew’s ‘interesting’ take on Celtic’s new summer signing

Celtic have made seven new signings this summer.

Bringing Kieran Tierney to Celtic was a masterstroke by Brendan Rodgers as the Hoops boss reinforced the left full-back position.

Also added to the Celtic ranks are Callum Osmand, Isaak English, Hayato Inamura and Benjamin Nygren as the Hoops’ first-team squad swells.

However, there is one new summer signing who Celtic hero Charlie Mulgrew appears to have doubts about and he hopes that all the hype surrounding his arrival is more than just that.

Charlie Mulgrew believes Celtic signing Shin Yamada is a ‘gamble’

Shin Yamada joined Celtic this weekend and his signing was announced just before the Newcastle United friendly.

After hearing Yamada is faster than Celtic hero Daizen Maeda in the J League, Mulgrew is still not convinced that the Japanese striker is the man Brendan Rodgers needs.

Mulgrew told The Go Radio Football Show, “It’s going to be interesting to see. Again, at one and a half million, two million, it’s a gamble again, you just never know what you’re going to get.

“If he’s faster than Maeda and then they’re going to need to open the gates up at Celtic Park aren’t they, because I don’t know how you get faster than him.

“And hopefully he’s not the speedboat with no driver that we spoke about earlier. Yeah, you’re hoping that he steps up and does a job.

“Listen, all these things are up in the air. It’s when the league starts and the manager’s seen them in training and starts to get his squad together.

“You begin to see who’s going to sort of get starts, get games, get game time, who’s good enough to step up, because the manager will see that in training.

“That’s straight away, he’ll know and understand and the players will know and understand who’s ready to make a mark.”

What Shin Yamada told the Celtic Park crowd at his unveiling

Yamada was introduced to the fans this weekend just before Celtic beat Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly.

And addressing the Celtic Park crowd, Yamada declared, “Come on the Hoops. Hail Hail.”

Clearly Yamada was briefed on what to say but it’s clear he is delighted to have joined the Scottish champions.

Will Yamada be the ‘speedboat with no driver’ as Mulgrew thinks? Only time will tell.
