Spurs captain told to follow Callum McGregor’s Celtic example over board silence

It’s been a difficult season for Celtic so far.

And no one exemplifies that better than captain Callum McGregor, who has had his manager change for the third time already this season.

McGregor has been linked with a Brendan Rodgers reunion in Saudi Arabia, given the pair’s close relationship which is well-known.

And these rumours were exacerbated by the Hoops skipper’s lack of media comments during the nightmarish 33-day spell of Wilfried Nancy.

McGregor has been silent on the appointment, and off-field matters in general, as Gabby Agbonlahor has been discussing.

The first thing I would do if I was on the Celtic board is – – – –

Gabby Agbonlahor on Celtic’s Callum McGregor vs Spurs captain

It’s not like there has been a lack of subject matter regarding off-field events at Celtic this season…

from Dermot Desmond’s outburst at Brendan Rodgers, the chaotic Celtic AGM and a wave of fan protests, it certainly hasn’t been quiet.

Agbonlahor was discussing Tottenham captain Cristian Romero’s recent Instagram post, which said that “other club officials [should be] coming out to speak, but they don’t.”

The post has widely been interpreted as a dig at the club’s board – and Agbonlahor wasn’t having it.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he brought up Hoops captain McGregor as an example, saying: “I just think you’ve got to be careful as a player.

“Look at what’s going on at Celtic. You don’t hear any Celtic players coming out and saying anything. Your job is to play football.

“Callum McGregor, all of the leaders in that Celtic team. Carry on playing your football, get results.

“Leave that to people above you. Romero – he’s done it before, I’m sure. He’s come out before with something and got fined for it by the club.

“If I was the club now, I’d fine him maximum wages. I’d say ‘shut your mouth, and play like a captain. You are not playing like a captain’.”

Callum McGregor’s only comments on Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy

McGregor didn’t say anything after Nancy’s tenure began, but shortly after his announcement, he said: “He sent me a nice message then just teed up meeting him when we came in after the game on Thursday.

“It’s been good. I spoke to him for about 20-25 minutes before he met the rest of the players. He’s a really nice guy, speaks well, has a really good idea of the game and how he wants to deliver it.

“First impression’s really, really good. Hopefully he got a good impression of me as well and I just said I’m here to help him as much as I can.

“I’ll try and lead the team as best I can on the pitch. It was a really positive meeting then ultimately, how you perform, what you do on the pitch is where everything will be judged.

“Celtic is a unique club. Glasgow’s a unique place to play football and live in. I’m sure he’s got other people helping him, but just naturally I think we’ll have conversations.

“He’ll feel the intensity of the city and the club. I said to him yesterday, if there’s anything I can do to help him in that sense as well, then I’m here to help and try and settle him and his staff quickly so that everyone can get moving on the football part.

“He’s moved around a fair bit in his life as well, so I’m sure he’ll be fine. But the job of the club and the staff and everyone here is to try and help everyone settle in, new managers, new players. I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

Very interesting words, looking back…
