Celtic left it late to bolster the attacking line, but McGowan thinks there is one area that they should’ve been signing someone in.
Stephen McGowan says Celtic should’ve signed a right winger
Two of the later additions from the summer transfer window were wide options.
Sebastian Tounekti and Michel-Ange Balikwisha were the duo that signed, but both are better on the left wing.
No right winger joined, leaving James Forrest as the only natural option, and McGowan was baffled by their decision to snub the position.
Speaking on the Press Box podcast, he said: “It’s perfectly obvious they still need more firepower in the central area and on the right wing, as you’re aware.
“The failure to sign a right winger was absolutely bewildering. Really, signing two left wingers, not signing a right winger — what on earth?”
Daizen Maeda’s right wing experiment has failed
Brendan Rodgers has spent the last few games deploying Daizen Maeda on the right wing to allow Tounekti to play on the left.
This has proven to be counter-productive as the Japan international has looked way off the mark when playing there and didn’t look himself until moving to his more familiar left-hand side.
The experiment has been tried enough times to realise that it won’t work, and the Celtic manager must revert back to what works, even if that means tough decisions are made from a selection perspective.
