Another season has drawn to a close, and fans can now look back on the campaign to see what has and hasn’t worked.

Thankfully, many things have gone right for Celtic, including celebrating trophy day at Parkhead on Saturday when Brendan Rodgers’ side recorded a 1-1 draw against St Mirren.

One huge change from the previous campaign was the summer arrival of Kasper Schmeichel, after Joe Hart decided to retire following that incredible Scottish Cup final win over Rangers.

The 38-year-old came in with as much experience as Hart departed with, including working with Rodgers during their time at Leicester City.

But who was better in the green and white colours?

Stiliyan Petrov picks between Kasper Schmeichel and Joe Hart after Celtic win the Premiership title

One thing can’t be argued: Hart did very well in Celtic’s colours, and he proved to be a top purchase from Tottenham after arriving under Ange Postecoglou.

But Stiliyan Petrov feels that Schmeichel edges out his former Manchester City teammate in one area, and that’s being ‘more comfortable’ playing out from the back, as he told Sky Sports Football (17/05/25).

Although Petrov wanted to add that the duo have one thing in common, and it isn’t a surprising quality that they possess.

“Perfect replacement,” said Petrov. “A great voice in the dressing room. Really loud. Demanding.

“He has played on the international level. He has played in the Premier League. You need somebody who has the authority. You have somebody who can lead from the back, and he was the perfect replacement for Joe Hart.

On whether Kasper is an ‘upgrade’ on Hart: “I think they are quite similar, but are very loud and very demanding,” added Petrov.

“Great goalkeepers as well. I think Schmeichel is maybe a little bit more comfortable on the ball and playing out from the back. I think that’s what Brendan was looking into when signing a goalkeeper.”

Petrov on working with Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa, and Schmeichel’s similarities

Petrov enjoyed a trophy-winning spell in the colours of Celtic before he linked up with Martin O’Neill when he became the Aston Villa manager.

The popular midfielder moved to Villa Park in 2006, enjoying a strong career in the Premier League.

Petrov wanted to compare his time with O’Neill, and how that is similar to what Schmeichel is doing with Rodgers at Celtic.

“But Brendan and Kasper have worked together, so they know each other, and it’s really important,” explained Petrov.

“When I moved down to Villa, and being able to work with Martin O’Neill. To have that opportunity to work again makes it more comfortable.

“You knew exactly what you have to do. You knew the demands from the manager. What his request is and what is required. And he makes the match easier.”
