Stiliyan Petrov states if Celtic should keep Greg Taylor after he returned to the XI

It has been a very interesting season for Celtic full-back Greg Taylor.

At the start of the campaign, Taylor was a regular starter, playing ahead of the now-departed Alexandro Bernabei, and one-time loan star, Alex Valle.

But, during the winter, when there were noises that Kieran Tierney could return to Celtic, things started to change for Taylor, including Brendan Rodgers having to publicly defend his player.

That was due to the criticism he was getting from the Celtic Park faithful, as eventually, January recruit Jeffrey Schlupp knocked the Scotland star to the bench, and the writing was on the wall.

For months and months now, everyone has felt that Taylor will leave Celtic, and sign on the dotted line for another club as a Bosman.

But have things now changed?

Stiliyan Petrov hails Greg Taylor as Celtic exit nears

Taylor was outstanding against Kilmarnock after returning to the XI, as Rodgers rang the changes from the abject showing against St Johnstone last time out.

Given Taylor’s performance, it has got people talking about what will happen with him, as Stiliyan Petrov gave the 27-year-old his flowers.

Petrov made it clear that, if it was up to him, he would ‘keep’ Taylor, as he explained the ‘incredible’ skill set he has in his locker, as he told Sky Sports Football (12/04/25).

“You never know,” said Petrov. “First of all, Greg Taylor has been a great servant and a great player for Celtic.

“He has put in so many good performances. He knows the club inside and out. I am sure the club are doing everything they can to keep him.

“Against Kilmarnock, he has shown what they will miss if he isn’t here, because his performance was brilliant. His performances are always honest. He is always on the ball. Always gives everything.

“When you have players like that, then you should be proud as a club that you have developed players like Greg Taylor. He is a great example for everybody else.

“You know what he does. Ange Postecoglou and now Brendan Rodgers. His position isn’t just fullback. He plays inverted fullback, which gets him into the middle. He is quite comfortable. His awareness is really good. He adapted really well when only good players can do that.

“When you have a player like that, then you should keep him. It’s incredible to have somebody who can adjust and be versatile.”

Special moment for Taylor before Celtic’s win over Kilmarnock

Whatever happens in the summer, Taylor will go down as a Celtic legend, and a man who won the lot in the green and white colours.

Perhaps it is touching that, after returning back to the side, he was able to carry his newborn baby as a mascot against Killie, before going on to produce a Man of the Match display. Perfect weekend!

Some will hope he can do it again, because that will then mean that he stays on board and challenges Tierney next season.

Either way, Rodgers needs another left-back option for next season, because Tierney is the only specialist he can pick from if nothing changes.
