Is this the last dance for Greg Taylor in Celtic colours?

On Saturday afternoon, Brendan Rodgers brought Taylor back into Celtic’s XI for their Premiership clash against Kilmarnock.

Celtic put five goals past Killie, started their still delayed title party, as Taylor produced a Man of the Match display, in what could be his final set of matches for the club.

Despite being the main man at left-back for large parts of this season, Taylor has come under fire from the Celtic fans, and throughout, there have been calls for him to be dropped.

That eventually happened when January signing Jeffrey Schlupp was brought into the building, but that showing against St Johnstone last week soon saw him drop to the bench.

Could all of that have worked in Taylor’s benefit, regarding where his future lies?!

Celtic fans want Greg Taylor to stay amid performance against Kilmarnock

With Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic next season, it has put someone like Taylor even more on the back foot, and increased the chances of him leaving.

But, the fact of the matter is, as of this moment in time, Tierney will be the only bona fide left-back for Rodgers to pick from next term.

And, after watching Taylor get back to his best against Killie, the Celtic Park faithful explained on social media that they would like the 27-year-old to stay on.

There is no doubt that this is a change of tune from the supporters because the noise was far different at the start of the campaign.

@MaedaMealOfThat showed his respect to Taylor: ‘I know Greg Taylor gets some criticism but what a performance from him today. If he does go in the summer I wish him all the best.’

@lonecelt67 made it clear: ‘Worth a contract’.

@hockie1916 continued that theme: ‘Definitely staying’.

@mgriffin8622 wants a Taylor and Tierney combo: ‘Give Greg Taylor the wages he’s looking for & have him & KT as our 2 left backs’.

@NotoriousBAG_ added: ‘I’ll be sad to see the back of Greg Taylor. Him and KT would have been great LB options.’

@rebelbhoy03 gave Taylor his flowers: ‘I know Taylor attracts mixed opinions but I think he’s been a good servant, never been the best but he’s served us well and played a big part in the last 4 seasons and the last few title wins’.

@Lewis_Matheson has said it out loud: ‘I’m gunna say it, I want Greg Taylor to stay.’.

@TheCelticWay3 explained why Taylor will be missed: ‘Say what you will about Greg Taylor but at this level, against these teams he’s so vital to how this team functions in possession and progressing the ball. He will be missed when he goes.’

@Bhoyvince feels things need to change with the soon-to-be out-of-contract star: ‘We need to talk about Greg Taylor. He should be offered a great contract so that he wants to stay. His style of play fits in superbly with what Celtic try to do. Other ‘better’ defenders can’t do the other bit of the job.’.

@CadetesGhirl raised an interesting question: ‘Could prove to be a huge mistake letting Greg Taylor leave just because Tierney is coming back. Given Tierney is likely to miss large number of games throughout the season, do we have an adequate second choice at left back without Taylor?’

@TimsRUs67 raised an interesting point: ‘If we signed a new left back, and he played at the level that Greg Taylor has today, we’d be delighted.’

Another person who wants Taylor to stay, as @innovatefc added: ‘Even if just as a domestic option (mostly facing a mid/low block)….cannot see how/why you would let Greg Taylor go.’

Taylor’s career at Celtic in numbers

Whatever happens, Taylor can hold his head up high, knowing that he was part of a very strong period for Celtic.

Brought in by Neil Lennon, he thrived under Ange Postecoglou and then became a favourite under the dominant Rodgers.

Including Celtic’s 55th title this term, this is Taylor’s trophy haul and stats for Scotland’s most successful club.
