Stuart Armstrong has been away from Scottish football ever since leaving Celtic in 2018.

The goalscoring midfielder was a mainstay during Brendan Rodgers‘ first spell at the club, racking up goals in big games and breaking into the Scotland side.

The 2017 Scottish Cup Final was perhaps the peak, when Armstrong’s rapid equaliser after Jonny Hayes’ opener paved the way for Tom Rogic to win it with one of the most iconic goals in Celtic’s modern history.

Now, after seven years spent playing with Southampton, Vancouver Whitecaps and Sheffield Wednesday, the midfielder has completed a return to Scottish football.

Scottish football is ‘Competitive and challenging’ claims Armstrong after Aberdeen move

Since departing Celtic Park in 2018, Armstrong has experienced the Premier League, MLS and Championship, as well as featuring in the European Championships for Scotland.

Despite this experience, the 33-year-old midfielder was keen to credit the league in which he learned his trade after returning to his boyhood club.

Speaking to Aberdeen’s official website, Armstrong said: “These things always happen fast, but I am delighted to be here.

“I’ve not been back to the city for a long time, so it’s nice to come back full circle in a football sense which is nice.

“It’s a good footballing decision for me to come here. It’s a chance for me to play competitive, challenging football, and the lure of playing in Europe is exciting.”

The 53-time Scotland international could make his Celtic Park return when the Celts take on Aberdeen in December.

Celtic join Aberdeen in utilising the free agent market

Celtic’s well-covered lack of business on Transfer Deadline Day has led to Brendan Rodgers also dipping into the free agent market.

In securing the signature of Kelechi Iheanacho, Rodgers has reunited with a former player who was on Leicester City’s books throughout the Northern Irishman’s time at the club.

Reports suggest he could be joined by another free Nigerian striker in rumoured target Emmanuel Dennis, who has spent time in England with Watford, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn.

However, Dennis would be unable to make the Hoops’ Europa League squad after the submission deadline passed on Tuesday night, leaving Rodgers short on attacking options for his European campaign.
