The brilliant reason why Victor Wanyama urged Alistair Johnston to hit the gym at Celtic; classic Wanyama

Victor Wanyama has been in typical, brilliant form while speaking about Celtic full-back Alistair Johnston.

Wanyama and Johnston are good pals from their time together at MLS side CF Montreal, with the former playing a part in the latter’s January move to Celtic.

Shortly after arriving in Scotland, Johnston labelled Wanyama “Agent Victor” and detailed some of the positive things the Kenyan had said about Celtic.

Now Wanyama has been given his opportunity to respond in an interview with the Celtic View Podcast.

Asked about his role in the move, he said: “Alistair, what a player first of all, and what a man. Besides football, he’s a very good human being.

“He asked me about Celtic and I told him everything. [I told him] that’s the place to be. Since then I couldn’t stop telling him about Celtic.

“I pushed him there and I was happy that he made that move. I’m also happy seeing him perform well every weekend. I still support the Bhoys so I’m happy when they do well.”

Wanyama was then asked if he still keeps in touch with Celtic, particularly with Johnston now starring.

“Sure, I try to follow every game,” he said. “Some of them are very early in the morning but I still try to watch.

“The Bhoys are doing well so I told Alistair that he had to go to the gym so that he can be ready to lift a lot of trophies.

“He was not used to that. Now he has to get used to it, so he needs more gym so he is able to lift the trophies.”

Wanyama has clearly lifted a few weights, or trophies, in his time, and Johnston seems to have the same steel required to be a success at Celtic.

Football is such a small world at times, and it’s amazing that a current Celtic star and one from a decade ago met at the other side of the world.

Johnston has already promised Celtic supporters that the League Cup triumph won’t be our last this season.

Wanyama clearly things more glory is on the way too, with his brilliant gym patter.

Strangely, the midfielder managed just three trophies in his time at the club. The Canadian could be on that number in a matter of months.

Better get hitting that gym Alistair.
