The surprising record that Celtic broke with Friday signing of Marco Tilio

Marco Tilio is now a Celtic player after making the switch from Melbourne City.

The deal for the 21-year-old was announced by the club on Friday morning, with Tilio signing a five year deal in Glasgow.

He will wear the number 23 jersey, his lucky number, and has already spoken about a distant call with Brendan Rodgers.

The Tilio deal is not understood to be a huge outlay by Celtic‘s standards. However, it has surprisingly broken quite a big record down under.

As announced by Melbourne City, the deal has set a new record for a fee received by an Australian team.

Put simply, Tilio is the most expensive player ever to be signed from Australia.

Strangely enough, the previous record was only set a few weeks ago when Jordan Bos moved from City to Belgian outfit KVC Westerlo. (Daily Mail)

Even more strangely, given today’s other news, the record prior to that was held by Aaron Mooy.

Bos cost Westerlo $2m (AUD) which equates to around £1.05m.

So we know that Celtic have paid more than that for Tilio. But it’s unlikely to be a much higher fee.

The signing of Tilio is more evidence of Celtic shopping in some untapped markets. We have dipped our toe in the Aussie market in the past, most notably with Tom Rogic.

If Tilio has half of the impact of the wizard, or the aforementioned Mooy, then we’ll be on to a winner.
