How Jock Stein & Rangers made Celtic fans go ‘berserk’ at Billy Connolly
There was a particular memory at Celtic Park where Jock Stein got involved an and made Connolly wear some Rangers attire just before Jimmy Johnstone’s testimonial against Manchester United.
And Stein made the legendary comedian to stand in front of The Jungle.
Connolly told the Daily Record, “I went and Jock Stein said to me, ‘I want you to be the referee’. He gave me a Rangers outfit – it was a blue top and a Rangers scarf and a hat.
“I had to lead Celtic onto the park dressed like this.
“In those days, it wasn’t the big flashy new temple we have got now. You went on and the building facing you was The Jungle. It was corrugated iron and there were people in there who had never been out of there.
“They booed like you’ve never heard a boo in your life. And the swearing was ridiculous and so I blew my whistle and pretended to send them off.
“They went berserk. They sang, ‘ You can stick your f—ing wellies up your a–e’. It was the joy of my life.
“It was amazing.”
