Tony Cascarino sees sense with ‘real powerhouses’ Celtic after Jamie O’Hara embarrasses himself

The outside view of Celtic can prove to be pretty pathetic at times.

What’s even worse is, these views come from those who have little understanding of Celtic, don’t follow them often and don’t pay much attention to Scottish football as a whole.

Jamie O’Hara proved that on Sky Sports recently, so much so that the British broadcaster, who pay for the rights to show top-flight football in Scotland, deleted their social media clip of the former midfielder claiming that English League One side Stockport County would win the Premiership title.

Many embarrassing things came out of O’Hara’s mouth, even seemingly questioning the size of Celtic, but thankfully, someone like Tony Cascarino can see sense compared to his fellow talkSPORT colleague.

Celtic and Rangers would be ‘real powerhouses’ in the Premier League

Cascarino played for Celtic for a brief period, so he understands what life is like in Glasgow’s footballing hotbed, including how big the champions of Scotland are, as he told talkSPORT.

The former striker wanted to point out that if Celtic were provided with the crazy money English Premier League sides are handed out each year, it would make the Hoops, alongside Rangers, ‘real powerhouses’ in the so-called best league in the world.

“The difference is, it’s not the size of the club,” said Cascarino. “Celtic and Rangers are huge football clubs that get an amazing following. It’s the finance that is the issue, as to why these clubs aren’t competitive.

“I would say they could both play in the Premier League. Probably be at the wrong end of the table is a fairer assessment of what they would be.

“But if these clubs came to the Premier League. They would suddenly have finance and the ability to buy some of the biggest and better names around, so they could buy £20, £30, and £40 million players like Wolves have done. Other clubs.

“If Celtic and Rangers had that in their armoury, they could be real powerhouses in the Premier League. Without a doubt. They could create really good sides.”

Tony Cascarino continues to hit the nail on Jamie O’Hara’s head

Before the millions and now billions were thrown about in English football, and that would be pre-1992, Scottish football could compete with their counterparts, and even on players.

But it’s a different world now, as Cascarino claimed that Celtic and Rangers have ‘suffered’ because of how the money side of things has completely and utterly changed.

Shebahn Aherne: “It’s no disrespect to Stockport either. I just think it’s a silly thing to say out loud (from O’Hara), to be fair.”

Cascarino: “That’s a massive gulf. The problem is whether it’s a League Two team. You know, come on!? Celtic and Rangers, I am pretty sure, even with their finances, are way superior and still have much better teams than that level.

“Kevin Doyle, I think, left or turned down Celtic to go to Wolves when they were in League One, because Wolves could pay more money. That was at that particular time, and that was a few years ago.

“It’s all about finance, why these two clubs have suffered. Celtic have got it, and so have Rangers at times, got their recruitment right for the level they are at, and created really good sides, but when it’s gone wrong, they suffer enormously.”
