Celtic are known to be in the market for new players this summer as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen the team for the Champions League campaign.

We all know that the goalkeeper position takes priority now that Joe Hart has left the club but the Celtic fans know that there are other positions that require strengthening if the club are to progress in Europe’s elite competition.

Brendan Rodgers needs a strong partner beside Cameron Carter-Vickers and the Celtic boss also needs someone to challenge Greg Taylor at left-back.

And after what Tottenham Hotspur have done this morning, the answer to the Celtic manager’s problems could be staring him right in the face.

Tottenham release Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga

In a statement released this morning by the North London club, Ange Postecoglou has just released former England u21 defenders Japhet Tanganga (25) and Ryan Sessegnon (24). [Tottenham FC]

Tanganga plays as a central defender whilst Sessegnon is a left-back. So why should the Celtic fans care about this?

Well, both players were once wanted by Celtic over the past few seasons. Tanganga was reportedly wanted by Celtic in 2021 by Neil Lennon during the ill-fated COVID season.

Tanganga struggled to break into Jose Mourinho’s team and it was rumoured he could have made the Parkhead switch on loan.

A versatile defender, Tanganga can be deployed across all positions in the back four but is predominantly a central defender.

Sessegnon was also on Celtic’s radar back in 2020. After making his £25m move from Fulham [BBC], he couldn’t get gametime due to the small matter of competing with Spurs legend, Gareth Bale.

The versatile Sessegnon can also be deployed on the left side of midfield and has been utilised as a left-winger, a position that is also open for strengthening for Celtic.

He has also been deployed on the right side of defence, midfield and wing over the course of his career.

Would both players be of interest to Brendan Rodgers now that they are free agents? You would have to assume that the Celtic boss would take a look considering both players were previously linked with moves.

They both fit the profile in terms of age and affordability for the club, especially now that they are free agents, so time will tell if Celtic will be tempted to take another look at both players.
