Two Celtic heroes could reunite in the MLS and face Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi

There are some Celtic connections in the MLS right now.

The main one comes in the form of Celtic’s former title-winning manager, Ronny Deila, who is the manager of Atlanta United, and interestingly enough, he has Kenny Miller as his assistant.

The MLS isn’t anywhere near the standard of any major European leagues, but it does have some star-studded names that have represented America’s home of ‘soccer’, both past and present.

Right now, Lionel Messi is donning the colours of Inter Miami, who are owned by David Beckham, as the Argentine star’s glittering career enters its final stages.

But could two Celtic heroes reunite in the MLS and possibly face one of the greatest of them all? The last time Inter and LAFC faced one another was in the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2025.

Giorgos Giakoumakis and Ange Postecoglou to reunite in the MLS?

Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham last month, despite the Treble-winner at Celtic winning the Europa League with the English side.

But there are suggestions, as reported by BBC Sport, that MLS side Los Angeles FC could turn to Postecoglou as their next coach.

Another man on LAFC’s radar is former Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis, according to reports in Mexico, with the Greek international currently playing for CD Cruz Azul.

Giakoumakis’ record under Postecoglou at Celtic

Postecoglou was in the Celtic Park dugout when Giakoumakis arrived from Dutch side VVV-Venlo in 2021, as he was another example of the club’s great recruitment.

Yes, Giakoumakis probably didn’t start or earn the regular minutes he wanted to, especially towards the end of his Celtic career.

But under Postecoglou, he was top class, and in truth, Celtic could do with a player of his calibre right now.
