‘Unless Dermot Desmond’ – Brendan Rodgers clarifies why he had to address question about his Celtic future

Brendan Rodgers admits he’s surprised at being questioned over his Celtic future.

The Celtic manager is nearing the end of the second year of his contract, with his current deal due to run out at the end of next season.

However, it seems that even with a full year still to run, a treble to be won and a Celtic team that he could once again take into the Champions League next season, Brendan Rodgers’ future at the Parkhead club seems to be the focus of journalists these days.

Even after Celtic hammered Kilmarnock yesterday, Rodgers was asked the question again as the Hoops gaffer moved quickly to address where he sees his immediate future as another title win nears.

Brendan Rodgers says Celtic doesn’t ‘need to worry’ about his immediate future

Rodgers was asked about his Celtic future by BBC reporter Martin Dowden before Celtic beat Kilmarnock, and here, he was once again forced to defend his position at the club.

Rodgers told Clyde Superscoreboard, “It’s not something that the club or I need to worry about now. This is about getting the job done, and we’ll see where we’re at over the season.

“But the club knows my position. I was always going to be here for the three years, but I’m sure we’ll have a chat of some sort over the course of the summer. But for now, it’s focusing on getting the job done.

“It’s been a great, great journey for us up until now. So we’ve already finished in the best way we possibly can.”

Brendan Rodgers will stay at Celtic ‘unless Dermot Desmond’ says so

So why did Rodgers feel the need to address whether or not he would be at Celtic beyond this summer? The Hoops boss explains why.

Rodgers continues, “I was just asked the question. But for any avoidance of doubt, because I was surprised when I got asked the question, I think if you were sat in my press conference here on the very first day I arrived, I promised unless I was removed I’d be here for three years minimum.

“So nothing changes. I was only really talking about, just in terms of team dynamic and how the game works.

“But no, there’s absolutely no doubt, unless Dermot Desmond tells me differently in the summer, I will be excited and ready for the beginning of the season.”

The timing of the question is bizarre to say the least. On the bring of Celtic’s ninth domestic treble and making progress in Europe, quite why Rodgers’ future at the club is being questioned is strange to say the least.

The likelihood of the Celtic manager being sacked is close to zero, as is the chances of him walking away like he did in 2019.

Rodgers is so close to rebuilding that trust and legacy that was broken when he left Celtic for Leicester six years ago.

The Carnlough-born man knows that making the same mistake again will mean he will never be forgiven by the Celtic support and that is something Rodgers is not going to let happen again.
