Watch Celtic youngster Dane Murray’s ‘harsh’ red card as Scotland’s UEFA U21 hopes end

International coverage continues for the Celtic fans as young Dane Murray got the call from Scott Gemmill to represent Scotland U21s.

Celtic youngster Murray is currently on loan at Queens Park as he looks to continue his development and gain some first-team experience.

After recovering from a serious injury, Murray played well for Celtic in a pre-season fixture against Queens Park and has also netted for Scotland U21s after the Hoops starlet scored against Malta last month.

Called upon again for the must-win Euro Championship qualifier against Kazakhstan, Murray suffered heartache after being sent off whilst Scotland were 1-0 up.

Scotland was cruising and needing just one more goal to help keep their chances of qualification alive when a slack pass from Lewis Neilson put young Murray in an impossible position as the Celtic youngster brought down Ivan Sviridov who was bearing down on goal.

Commentating on the game, Stephen McGinn says whilst the red card was ‘harsh’ he can understand why it was issued.

McGinn said, “I think Dane Murray’s pointing that the offence is committed outside the box but the momentum because Sviridov stays on his feet, he’s going down, Dane Murray’s fell on top of him and without VAR the referee got absolutely no option but to give the penalty.

“He can’t be sure that that the foul is committed outside the box and as you say, double jeopardy seems so, so harsh.”

Scotland eventually lost the game 3-2 which Scott Gemmill’s hopes of reaching the finals of the UEFA tournament next summer.

Dane Murray’s season as on-loan Celt enjoys Queens Park spell

Despite his red card last night, young Murray has been a stand-out in the on-loan Celtic youngster’s time at Queens Park.

Starting and finishing The Spiders’ last eight fixtures, Murray has tasted defeat just twice. Once at the hands of a 1-0 defeat by Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen and an unusual 3-0 hammering by Partick Thistle.

Murray has enjoyed wins over Morton, Airdrie, Hamilton Accies and promotion favourites, Dunfermline Athletic as he continues to learn his trade in the Scottish Championship.

Out of contract at the end of this season, young Murray is certainly putting a case forward for Brendan Rodgers to deal him in if he keeps up his impressive domestic form.
