What Celtic-linked Sammie Szmodics could cost as Blackburn Rovers’ stance becomes clear

Celtic have been linked to a number of players in various positions over the last few months as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad for the season ahead.

Thankfully, it looks like the search for Joe Hart’s replacement is all but over as Kasper Schmeichel seems to be the man the Celtic boss wants above the 20 goalkeepers that were linked to the vacant position.

But as every Celtic fan knows, there is more than just one player needed to strengthen the side. With Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah expected to be the next players to join the club this summer, Brendan Rodgers is looking like he is hard at work to get the players he wants this summer.

However, there is more work that needs to be done. With Hyeongyu Oh almost certainly on his way out of Celtic and Sead Haksabanovic gone, Rodgers will need another attacker in the door to help bolster his attacking options.

Szmodics told to sign a new deal or leave

According to The Sun print edition page 49, Blackburn Rovers have told Sammie Szmodics that he must sign a new deal at the club or else he will be sold this summer.

This comes as news that the Irish international could be about to join Ipswich Town for £6m plus add-ons as his future becomes uncertain with the English Championship side.

Celtic were linked with a player labelled as ‘remarkable‘ by Ally McCoist back in April when it was thought he could cost around the £20m mark but that seems way off the mark now.

Szmodics was a sensation at Blackburn last season as his 33 goals kept them out of a Championship relegation battle. The Blackburn attacker has scored 107 career goals in just 355 appearances. [Transfermarkt]

Now that newly-promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town are looking to sign him, Celtic may well be priced out of a move in terms of salary for the 28-year-old.
