What Rangers fans ‘quietly’ admit about Celtic ahead of Russell Martin’s ‘disappointing’ appointment

Another so-called challenger is arriving on Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic doorstep pretty soon.

It seems as though Rangers are going to appoint Russell Martin as their next manager, after sacking Philippe Clement in February, and then interim manager Barry Ferguson leaving at the end of the season.

Celtic have won four out of the last four titles, including 14 out of the last 15, as well as Rodgers seeing off Rangers managers left, right and centre during his time in the Celtic Park dugout.

But now the task to try and even get close to Celtic’s dominance in Scotland is going to fall to a man who was sacked by Southampton in December.

Even though there has been a lot of noise coming from Rangers fans of late, especially with the investment from the 49ers Enterprises.

At least some of them can see the truth.

What Rangers fans will ‘quietly’ admit about Celtic

Gordon Dalziel understands what it is like in the pressure cooker of Glasgow, mainly from a Rangers perspective.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he was reacting to suggestions that supporters from the Ibrox club are ‘disappointed’ by Martin’s expected appointment.

And whilst Dalziel urged for Martin to be given a chance, he made it clear that Rangers fans would ‘quietly’ admit that there is a significant gap between them and Scotland’s most successful club.

“It doesn’t matter who comes into the building, with the new investment and everything that is coming along,” said Dalziel. “They have got to hit the ground running. It’s a big, big year for Rangers.

“Rangers fans will admit it, quietly, there is a big gap between Celtic and Rangers. You have seen that with the league, and everything. Celtic were going for a treble, so it’s up to Rangers to close that gap.

“The only way you can do that is by getting the right appointment. I know Rangers fans will be disappointed with the fact that it’s maybe Russell Martin. A percentage of them, not all of them.”

How many titles have Celtic and Rangers won since 2000?

Celtic and Rangers have always had their dominant periods. A certain generation will remember the Gers’ ten being stopped in the 90s.

But, after that, the cycle usually turns the other way. Or, the league flows one way or another for several years.

That hasn’t been the case for 25 years now, and despite Steven Gerrard stopping the ten, Celtic have still gone on to win four on the trot.
