What Sky Sports noticed about Callum McGregor’s actions towards Celtic fans in Paisley

Callum McGregor produced one of the moments of the season for Celtic against St Mirren over the weekend.

It came at an ample time because, just 24 hours before, Celtic’s AGM was being cancelled by Peter Lawwell, as the relationship between the fans and the board took a turn for the worse.

If anybody in that Celtic dressing room is aware of the off-field issues at Parkhead, then it’s McGregor, and he did address it during his post-match interview.

But Sky Sports also picked up on the message he was seemingly sending out to the paying fans at Paisley, after his stunning last-minute winner.

Celtic statement on AGM postponement

Such conduct is completely unacceptable and hugely disappointing, and while today’s events are completely outwith our control, clearly we regret the impact on our shareholders who were deprived of the opportunity to take part in an orderly and constructive meeting.

As all the players do, after the game, they will go towards the away fans and show their appreciation by applauding them.

Whilst McGregor did that, his gestures towards the travelling fans were rather interesting, and it was discussed on Sky Sports Football (22/11/25).

Eilidh Barbour noted how the Celtic skipper, whilst motioning with his hands towards the fans, was urging ‘everyone to be together’ given the fiasco of the AGM.

Chris Sutton was asked whether it should be up to McGregor to try and bring everyone together, as the former striker stated that in ‘difficult’ times, you need your leaders to ‘step forward’, and he is doing just that.

Poll: Do you have faith in the Celtic board?

Eilidh Barbour: “These are the celebrations at the end, and what Callum McGregor is talking about is going over to the supporters. It looks like he is saying, ‘everyone together. The club and the supporters need to be united.’

“You (Sutton) spoke about how that important it is for success. Results will help with that. But is it the captain’s job to be doing that?”

Sutton: “Well, I think it’s part of his job. I think in a difficult time for the club, you need your leaders to step forward, and he did that in the right way when it mattered. It looked like the game had gone for Celtic. Brilliant finish.

“He is a class player. He always has been. Just imagine this Celtic team without a Callum McGregor. There have been a few fans who have suggested that he has had his best days. I still think he has such an important role for this Celtic team. Leading from the front. He is such a class player.”
