‘Who is he’ – Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers called out in brutal fashion by ex-USMNT star

Cameron Carter-Vickers is loving life as a Celtic player.

In 2021, then-Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou brought in Carter-Vickers on a loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur, and that soon turned into a permanent transfer.

It wasn’t too long before Carter-Vickers laid claim to be the best defender in Scotland, and he backed that up by winning trophy after trophy, including the Treble under Postecoglou.

Another Treble could be on its way under Brendan Rodgers this season, as Celtic dominate on the domestic scene once again, despite a few iffy displays in the Glasgow derby of late.

But that same feel-good factor or form can’t be transcended on the international stage for the USMNT international.

Carter-Vickers is now managed by former Tottenham and Chelsea boss, Mauricio Pochettino, but life across the pond hasn’t started the way the Argentine would have liked.

Whilst Auston Trusty was injured and missed the recent international fixtures, Carter-Vickers was available and he played, but he isn’t impressing.

Celtic hero Cameron Carter-Vickers criticised for USMNT displays

The USA will host the 2026 World Cup, alongside Canada and Mexico, so it puts extra pressure on those nations to perform, given that they have home advantage.

But the USMNT aren’t playing as well as they would like and recently suffered two very poor Concacaf Nations League losses.

Carter-Vickers didn’t start the quarter-final defeat to Panama, but he did start the third-place playoff loss against Canada, and he didn’t impress.

Former USMNT goalkeeper Tony Meola called out Celtic’s starting centre-back and questioned who he is when discussing the USMNT squad, as he told CBS Sports.

“How are we defining Gold Cup guys,” asked Meola about who Pochettino will select for the Gold Cup ahead of the World Cup.

“Don’t you think that he (Pochettino) is going to call everybody that is available now (rather than just the back-up players), based on what happened here (in the UEFA Nations League), that would be my only question.

“We still got to see centre-backs. Cameron Carter-Vickers. Who is he? I didn’t like what I necessarily saw against Canada.

“We think Mark McKenzie (other CB option for Poch). If we split him in those two categories. He is a World Cup guy right now. He believes in him. Chris Richards, as much as I don’t think he has played well in a national team jersey, he has done well at club level, so throw him in.”

Who is Carter-Vickers competing against for a USMNT spot?

On the one hand, Carter-Vickers is playing for a team that is winning week in and week out, but the Scottish League isn’t regarded as highly outside of their own four walls.

But he is playing in the Champions League and not many of his teammates, including those who can play at centre-back, can lay claim to that, in fact, none of them can, other than his own club teammate.

But here is the list of centre-backs Carter-Vickers is competing for ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
