Why Celtic icon Scott Brown will not become St Johnstone’s new manager

Celtic legend, Scott Brown, is set to stay at Ayr United after turning down the opportunity to manage St Johnstone this week.

Brown was one of the names Saints owner, Adam Webb, was keen to hire to replace the departed Craig Levein.

With Brown reportedly ‘keen’ to talk to the Scottish Premiership club, it did seem like the former Celtic hero’s next step in management could be about to happen.

However, it seems now that Brown has decided to stay put at Ayr United and will be in the Somerset Park dugout for his next home game against Greenock Morton on Saturday.

St Johnstone’s pursuit of Scott Brown

Scott Brown is having a great season at Ayr United as he sits top of the Scottish Championship albeit with one extra game played.

However, the Daily Mail reports that despite holding talks with the former Celtic captain earlier this week, Brown decided that a move to Perth wasn’t for him.

Undeterred, Saints owner Webb made one last attempt to persuade Brown to make the McDiarmid Park switch on Wednesday night. Still, after two attempts to convince him, the Celtic legend stuck to his guns and will remain the Ayr United boss for the foreseeable future.

Clearly whatever was discussed between Webb and Brown was not enough to coax Brown into his next managerial step and St Johnstone’s loss is undoubtedly Ayr’s gain.

St Johnstone will now focus on Aberdeen’s Peter Leven and Larne coach, Tiernan Lynch.

Brown looks destined for a good managerial career

Brown took his first steps into management after leaving Celtic to cut his teeth at Aberdeen as assistant to Jim Goodwin back in 2021.

After less than a season at Pittodrie, Brown took the plunge and moved to England’s League One to take up the Fleetwood Town role.

After a successful first season, the Celtic icon helped Fleetwood avoid relegation and made history in the FA Cup reaching the fifth round for the first time in their history.

Now at Ayr United, Brown looks like he has the south coast club on course for a promotion push as he continues his fledgling managerial journey.

Once asked about becoming the manager of Celtic one day, Brown said he had to ‘earn’ the right to do that and not get the job based on his previous history of the club.

Will that day ever come? Who knows but what is clear is that Brown was made for football management and looks set for a very good career as the main man.
