Roberto Martinez has left his role at Portugal after their World Cup exit.
During Martinez’s time with Portugal, he was linked with the Celtic job, and there are some who are suggesting he could yet become the club’s long-term manager.
Yes, Martin O’Neill is in the dugout right now, but everyone is aware that he isn’t the long-term option despite Celtic’s domestic double success last term.
In the meantime, Martinez could land his next gig on the international stage again, because he is now being linked to the vacant Scotland manager’s job.
👀 Has the World Cup shown that Celtic dodged a bullet in Roberto Martinez?
Roberto Martinez to be Scotland’s next manager?
When Portugal were still in the World Cup, reports did emerge that Martinez was going to leave, regardless of the end result.
It was also suggested at the time, amid the links to Celtic, that he would be open to remaining on the international stage.
Now talkSPORT are reporting that Martinez is emerging as a ‘contender’ for the Scotland job after Steve Clarke resigned following the group stage exit at the World Cup.
It has been claimed by talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook that there could be something in the water regarding Martinez being on the Hampden touchline.
“That might not be as fanciful as it seems,” Crook said when asked about Martinez and Scotland. “I was told a while ago that Martinez potentially was a contender for Celtic.
“I believe he’s got a Scottish wife and wouldn’t be against the idea of living in Scotland. I think he’d have to take a huge pay cut from what he’s been earning as Portugal manager.
“Or maybe the SFA need to find a bit of outside investment, much like the US have done with Mauricio Pochettino. So Martinez is an interesting contender.”

Scotland internationals at Celtic
If Martinez is the next Scotland boss, then it would mean regular visits to Celtic Park.
The champions of Scotland have Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston playing for the national side, while Callum McGregor retired after Euro 2024.
You also have Colby Donavan coming through, so if he continues his rise, then don’t be surprised to see him wearing Scotland colours sooner rather than later.
Luke McCowan is another one, but he isn’t starting enough games on a regular basis to really stamp his name down.
