Wilfried Nancy explains his bizarre social media post amid Celtic crisis

Social media is the last thing that Wilfried Nancy will be worried about right now.

He has lost his first four games as Celtic manager, in a start unprecedented in the club’s history.

Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final defeat to St Mirren felt like a low point, but in Nancy’s first away game in charge, things somehow got even worse.

Daizen Maeda opened the scoring in a first half which Celtic dominated, and Dundee United were lucky to get into the break at just a goal down.

But an abysmal start to the second half saw United turn it around, and Celtic weren’t able to turn it back around in the second period.

Nancy was coming into the game at Tannadice with a backdrop of more than just poor results.

He seemingly took to social media on Tuesday night, with a post about the circle of control which was widely scrutinised by Celtic and opposition fans alike.

Some weren’t sure if it was definitely his, but speaking before the game in Dundee, Nancy confirmed that it was very much his.

He also explained the thoughts behind it, saying that his wife had played a part.

He told BBC Radio Scotland: “My wife was not happy and to be honest, believe me or not, the profile was about Columbus.

“So my X picture was about Columbus, me being in the locker room of Columbus.

“So I just wanted to change what I have on my WhatsApp.

“Simple as that. So it was not a mistake or something. I don’t want to create a battle so simple as that.

“I did it because my picture was looking upstairs in the locker room of Columbus so I just wanted to change what I have on my WhatsApp. Simple as that.”

If the decision was just about changing his profile picture, it was certainly an interesting choice of a new one.

What now for Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy?

This is the first time Celtic have lost four consecutive since Jock Stein’s last season in 1977-78.

Celtic fans made their thoughts on Nancy clear after the game, with audible chants calling for him to be sacked already.

Just hours before the game at Tannadice, a ‘club update’ from Michael Nicolson confirmed that Nancy maintains the full public backing of the Celtic board.

So it looks like he will still be in the dugout in Sunday’s clash with Aberdeen – but the atmosphere at Celtic Park will be telling.
