Wilfried Nancy has been in the door at Celtic for just over a week.

But already, plenty has been said about him, after two defeats in his opening two games.

Nancy was criticised for his use of a tactics board in his first match against Hearts. On Thursday against Roma, Celtic were swept aside by half-time.

In search of his first win in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final against St Mirren, he now has so much riding on Sunday’s Hampden showdown.

So how important will it be for getting the fans on side? That’s what Nancy was asked at his pre-match press conference.

Have the Celtic board set Wilfried Nancy up to fail?

Wilfried Nancy on being ‘the right guy’ at Celtic

Regardless of your feelings on the new boss so far, there is little doubt that he finds himself in a difficult situation.

His instant move to a back three has proven a challenge for the Celtic players to adapt to.

Sunday feels pivotal in vindicating his approach, which has failed to yield results so far.

At the presser, he was asked if the game had personal importance for him, in terms of getting the fans on side.

He said: “For me, no. For my players, yes. And for the fans, yes.

“Because like I said – you start to know me now – yes, I want to win a trophy. I’m pretty sure that if we don’t win it, for sure, it’s gonna be difficult, because when we lose, this is painful.

“But again, I am optimistic as a person, so hopefully, we’re gonna do it, and also, if it’s gonna validate what we are doing. But if not, I don’t want to think about this.

“Because at the moment, I want to stay positive. That’s the way I think. I’m gonna have all the time to show and do my stuff, and to convince the fans that I am the right guy.

“I just came in, and the standard that I want is clear. This is similar as Roma – like I said, intensity, and so on. After that, the standard, we have it already.

“Because the desire to compete, the desire to train well to improve, this is all there. The desire, also, to do what it takes to have a good performance, we have it.

“After that, we have to be better in terms of execution. But again, what I can tell you is that we are on the right track. Where we are, this is the right track.

“This is enough, I understand very well, and I know that. But again, for one week, I can see good stuff – also, to improve on certain things, but it will come.”
