Benjamin Arthur would be a safer choice to start for Celtic against Rangers than Auston Trusty

Benjamin Arthur earned rave reviews for his performance in Celtic’s win against Aberdeen and deserves to keep his place.

Arthur was called up at late notice after Dane Murray sustained an eye injury in the warm-up but produced a man of the match performance.

Auston Trusty is able to play in the Scottish Cup despite serving a three-match ban, but Arthur should get the nod instead.

Why Benjamin Arthur is a better choice than Auston Trusty for Rangers

It’s a lot of pressure to put on Arthur, who only made his first start for the Bhoys at Pittodrie on Wednesday night, but one that he can rise to.

The 20-year-old was praised for his post-match interview and a wise head on young shoulders will bring some calm to the chaos at Ibrox.

Trusty has been the opposite of that in recent weeks and picked up red cards against Hearts and Hibernian while also perhaps being fortunate to get away with one against Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final.

Additionally, as a right-footed centre-back, Arthur is better-suited to playing on the side that the American international would usually line up in alongside Liam Scales, bringing more balance to the team.

This also opens up more space on the pitch, allowing the full-backs to move wider to receive the ball and maintain a structure that is harder to break down.

Could Celtic sign Benjamin Arthur permanently?

Martin O’Neill has tipped Arthur to play in the Premier League one day and Brentford will be monitoring his loan spell with careful eyes.

Keith Andrews’ side have an outside shot of qualifying for Europe and will need as many bodies as possible.

Having been compared to Virgil van Dijk before, there is a belief that he will make it down south and any hopes of signing the England U20 international would probably rely on an inflated fee to secure his signature.
