Celtic’s link with Louis Munteanu is diminishing, which now appears to be a positive for the Parkhead club

Munteanu, a striker for the current Romanian title contenders, first appeared on Celtic’s radar back in July as the Bhoys searched for a replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi.

However, Celtic’s hopes of landing Munteanu appeared to have hit a snag after an unnamed club were said to be in pole position to sign the three-goal striker.

And it appears that could be good news for Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy after the 23-year-old forward was caught up in a scandal back in Romania that simply would not be tolerated in Glasgow.

Celtic target Louis Munteanu’s FCSB stunt leaves CFR Cluj owner raging

Munteanu caused controversy this Christmas after he was pictured sporting CFR Cluj’s biggest rivals FCSB’s home top in public.

That caused Cluj owner Ioan Varga to lose his cool and blast the youngster as he labelled Munteanu ‘brainless’ over the incident.

Varga told GSP, “It’s a misplaced, brainless gesture. I don’t know what he was thinking and who told him it was a good idea. I didn’t like it at all, I’m angry.

“I don’t want to say more, because it’s Christmas. I’ll talk to him. Leaving for FCSB is out of the question. He’s only transferring abroad and only if the amount is one that I consider satisfactory.”

The stunt earned Munteanu a €2,100 fine, which is 10% of his current salary.

This latest controversy surrounding the Romanian striker is further proof that Celtic have dodged a bullet, as Munteanu seems extremely unprofessional and raises questions about Munteanu’s character and respect for the Cluj fans who adore him.

What FCSB owner said about Celtic target Munteanu’s stunt

FCSB were reportedly interested in buying Munteanu but were put off with his €60,000 monthly salary demands.

However, that hasn’t stopped the Romanian champions’ owner Gigi Becali from commenting on the controversy.

Becali said, “I haven’t spoken to Louis Munteanu yet. Did he put on his shirt? Oh, well, if he put it on his own initiative.

“It means he loves FCSB and anything is possible. Now, yes, I’m really thinking about taking it! The situation is changing!”

Imagine if Munteanu was a Celtic player and was trying to force a move by wearing a Rangers jersey? The Hoops really have dodged a bullet with this one.
