Celtic have been here before and have likely missed the boat for Kasper Hogh

Kasper Hogh appears to be the latest mid-season transfer target for Celtic.

The striker is part of the Bodo/Glimt team that has just exited the Champions League after a disastrous collapse from a 3-0 first-leg win over Sporting CP.

Celtic’s interest in Hogh was well-documented in January, but despite the Hoops reportedly being ‘poised’ to bid for the 25-year-old, his form quickly caused his price tag to skyrocket.

Despite Bodo’s European adventure now being over, it’s hard not to feel like Celtic have now missed the boat for Hogh.

How much should Celtic pay to sign Kasper Hogh?

Celtic’s Kasper Hogh interest is too little, too late

Depending on who you believe, the Dane’s price tag is now anywhere between £10m and £16m.

To believe that Celtic are now the frontrunners for anyone with this value is pie-in-the-sky stuff.

Hogh finished as the second-top goalscorer in last season’s Eliteserien, also racking up seven Europa League goals as the Arctic Circle side made the semi-final.

This season, he managed five in the Champions League proper, netting against Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and hitting a brace against Manchester City.

Phillippe Clement’s Norwich City had reportedly been leading the race to sign Hogh before the City game in January, but his performance may just have taken him out of their reach.

Since then, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive, with Premier League duo Leeds and Wolves and a host of other European clubs being named as admirers.

At 6 ft 1 in tall, Hogh ranks 35th for top speed in the Champions League this season, demonstrating an impressive double threat for pace and power.

If Celtic are to reignite their interest for Hogh in the summer, they will be joining a lengthy queue – to be frank, they’ve probably missed the boat.

Two extremely impressive European runs back-to-back will have done Bodo no harm financially, and they won’t be pressured to sell on the cheap.

Celtic have been here before with the Norwegian side – both Philip Zinckernagel and Patrick Berg have been widely-reported transfer targets for the Hoops while at the Norwegian club in the past.

Bodo/Glimt players that beat Celtic under Ange Postecoglou: where they are now

Many in the Parkhead crowd were impressed when Bodo, still under the management of Kjetil Knutsen, came to Celtic Park and beat Ange Postecoglou’s Hoops in 2022.

Hugo Vetlesen, who scored and assisted for the Norwegian side that day, now plays for Club Brugge after being brought to Belgium by Ronny Deila in 2023.

Fellow goalscorer Amahl Pellegrino now plays for San Diego in MLS, whilst star forward Ola Solbakken was signed by Roma before moving to Greece and Japan; he now plays for Nordsjaelland in Denmark.

On the bench for Bodo that day were present-day Celt Joel Mvuka and future Bundesliga winner Victor Boniface.
