Celtic youngster’s failed deadline day loan move could be a blessing in disguise

One club’s loss is another’s gain and for Celtic, they may have been handed a blessing in disguise.

The transfer window proved to be a frustrating one for the Hoops as Brendan Rodgers missed out on a number of targets, despite bringing in 11 new faces.

There is a new headache to deal with now after Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston withdrew from the Scotland squad, leaving Celtic short of options at full-back.

Alistair Johnston’s injury also means that Colby Donovan is the only available right-back, which could be a blessing in disguise.

Colby Donovan almost left Celtic on deadline day

Donovan impressed during pre-season and made his competitive debut against Livingston in the Scottish Premiership before coming on as a sub in the defeat to Kairat Almaty.

As an 18-year-old, the youngster is still third choice but had the chance to get a loan away only for Donovan’s move to Dundee to collapse late on.

Thankfully, given the current situation, Donovan staying at Celtic Park is a blessing, as it allows Rodgers to play a natural option without moving anyone out of position.

Colby Donovan is ready to play for Celtic

We’ve only seen glimpses of the young man in action so far, but Donovan has all the makings of a great Celtic player.

There are shades of Tierney to his game in the way he likes to get forward, past the winger and deliver balls into the box.

It’s something the right-hand side has desperately missed since Johnston was sidelined and could add a new dimension to the Bhoys after the international break.
