Celtic suffered an almighty blow against Kairat Almaty.

During the first leg of the Champions League play-off, star right-back Alistair Johnston pulled up during the first-half with a hamstring injury.

It was later confirmed that Johnston would miss the next few months of action, meaning Anthony Ralston will be given much more game time.

Ralston played against Rangers on Sunday, and the only real back-up he has in the position is youngster Colby Donovan, who impressed at times in pre-season.

He was mooted for a loan move this window, but Celtic have now made a decision on that.

Donovan will not leave Celtic for Dundee loan

According to The Courier, as well as journalist Mark Hendry, Donovan will not be leaving Celtic on loan this summer.

Dundee were the club leading the race for the defender who turns 19 this month. However, the Hoops need Donovan this season to cover Ralston.

Hendry reported on X: “Celtic want to keep player to accommodate injury to Alistair Johnston. Loan had looked likely before injury, Celtic now need backup for Anthony Ralston.”

Donovan has played twice for Celtic this season

Donovan made 30 appearances for Celtic B last season, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

He made his Celtic first-team debut against Livingston in the 2-0 win at Parkhead, before featuring versus Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan.

Brendan Rodgers gave him plenty of minutes in pre-season, but Dundee began holding talks with Celtic for the right-back.

Scott Brown’s Ayr United were also said to be ‘keen’ on Donovan’s services, but he won’t be exiting Celtic this transfer window.
