Celtic’s top five one-season wonders as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain closes in on short-term deal

Celtic are close to making another signing as a deal to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nears completion.

Fabrizio Romano reported late on Thursday night that the Hoops and Oxlade-Chamberlain have settled on a six-month deal to bring the Premier League winner to Parkhead.

Since leaving Besiktas, the midfielder has been training with Arsenal to maintain his fitness and is seen as the final piece of the puzzle by Martin O’Neill.

Six months may only be temporary, but there are plenty of other former Celtic players who have impressed in just a single season. Here, 67 Hail Hail looks at five of the best one-season wonders.

Marc Rieper (1997-1998)

Hoops supporters will forever remember Marc Rieper for being part of the squad that stopped Rangers from winning 10 league titles in a row.

Wim Jansen signed him and entrusted him to play in the centre-back role, where he took things to the next level.

Yes there may have been the likes of Henrik Larsson up top, but Rieper was arguably as important.

A foot injury meant that he could only play a single season, retiring shortly after, but he gave it his all.

Ramon Vega (2000-01)

Like Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramon Vega arrived in the second half of the campaign and proved to be a great acquisition.

He scored twice on his debut but proved to be a rock at the back as he helped the Hoops secure an infamous Treble in O’Neill’s first year as manager.

Vega loved his time at Celtic and wanted to make it a permanent one. However, nothing materialised and he ended up elsewhere.

Craig Bellamy (2004-05)

Following a fallout with Graeme Souness at Newcastle United, Celtic took full advantage and signed the promising Welshman on loan.

Bellamy proved to be an instant success and ended his time in Glasgow with nine goals from 15 games, the pick of those being a fantastic goal against Rangers.

It wasn’t to be though as the forward chose to sign for Blackburn Rovers that summer. Since then, Bellamy has been linked with the Celtic job, so maybe one day he will return to Paradise.

Jason Denayer (2014-2015)

Forget Virgil van Dijk, how good was Jason Denayer while on loan?

The pair formed a lethal defensive partnership that was a nightmare for any opposition attack to face.

Denayer was as solid as a rock during his spell on loan from Manchester City, which made it all the more sad when he decided not to stay and chose to move to Lyon the following summer instead.

Aaron Mooy (2022-2023)

There were doubts about Aaron Mooy when Ange Postecoglou made the call to bring him in on a free.

His age and previous stint in China suggested that he may not be up to the demands of Scottish football and European nights. We needn’t have worried.

Mooy was instrumental in the middle of the park, chipping in with goals and assists, as well as being crucial to the way Ange-ball managed to blossom.

Fans were gutted when he announced he was leaving, which says a lot about his impact.
