Forget Johnny Kenny, his Celtic teammate has been the real difference maker

Johnny Kenny is earning all the plaudits, and rightly so, but there is another teammate who deserves their flowers too.

Kenny scored again as Celtic beat Kilmarnock 4-0 and is currently averaging a goal every 75 minutes in the Scottish Premiership.

That form has seen the forward recalled to the Republic of Ireland national team in place of Evan Ferguson, who has been forced to withdraw through injury.

He has been a bright spark in a difficult campaign, but there is another who has arguably had a bigger impact.

Auston Trusty’s return has inspired Celtic’s return to form

After suffering an injury in pre-season, Auston Trusty has been forced to spend a lot of the season watching from the substitutes bench.

His big break came in unfortunate circumstances as Cameron Carter-Vickers was ruled out for the season after pulling up in the Sturm Graz win.

Brendan Rodgers’ resignation then meant he was finally given a chance under Martin O’Neill, and he took it with both hands.

Since then, the centre-back has started every game, in which the Hoops have won three of the four games, and been named the man of the match twice.

Celtic haven’t missed Cameron Carter-Vickers

There was a time where the idea of playing without Carter-Vickers would give fans nightmares at the thought of what could happen.

However, Trusty’s partnership with Liam Scales has been mightily impressive, with the pair earning two clean sheets together, to the point where you wouldn’t know that Carter-Vickers is out on the sidelines.

Trusty has also been called back up to the USA’s national team for their November friendlies just months before the 2026 World Cup starts as a reward for his great form, and could even take his fellow countryman’s spot in the squad next summer.
