Forget the romance of it, Celtic should not try and re-sign Kyogo Furuhashi in the January transfer window

Kyogo Furuhashi has been anything but impressive in his time at Birmingham City, sparking questions about his long-term future at the club already.

Signed for nearly £10m by the big-spending Championship club, Kyogo has only managed to score once in 21 appearances.

Furuhashi missed a sitter against Southampton the other week as fans began to turn on him.

He was a prolific bagsman at Celtic, something they have struggled to replace since the Japanese forward’s exit.

News of a possible January departure has led to some speculation that the Hoops could launch a bid to bring him back to Celtic Park.

While it sounds nice on paper, this is not the move that the club or player needs right now.

Would you rather have wing-backs or a striker join the club in January?

Why Celtic should avoid re-signing Kyogo Furuhashi

A striker should be at the top of Wilfried Nancy’s list next month.

Daizen Maeda is more comfortable out on the left while Johnny Kenny has been inconsistent to say the least.

Kelechi Iheanacho is not reliable when it comes to fitness, and Callum Osmand is out on the sidelines until the end of the season.

Yes, Kyogo may have previous experience of the Scottish game, but he is bang out of form. Aged 30, and probably on big wages too, it wouldn’t be the long-term signing the club needs.

Coming back for a second time could also ruin his previous legacy.

We’ve seen it happen before with managers like Neil Lennon, and it would be no different for Kyogo if he failed the second time around.

Who should Celtic look to sign instead?

What Celtic need is someone who can come in and lead the line for years to come, or someone who will be here for a while before being sold on for profit. Louis Munteanu is a perfect example of this.

Munteanu is expected to leave CFR Cluj in the winter, and could be available for a cut-price deal as they try to ease their financial burdens.

Diego Rossi is another name that has been mentioned due to his relationship with Nancy at Columbus Crew, but could they tempt the 27-year-old back to Europe after his failed stint in Turkey?

One thing that’s for certain is that it is vital that a number nine comes in next month.
