It’s time for Celtic fans to talk about Greg Taylor after Marcelo Saracchi deal falls through

It has been 12 months since Greg Taylor departed Celtic for a new chapter in his career.

Taylor joined PAOK in Greece, where he has had mixed fortunes, as he mainly played a back-up role for a team that finished third last term.

However, Taylor has recently stated ‘never say never’ regarding a possible return to Celtic, which makes it even more interesting given the Marcelo Saracchi news.

Despite Saracchi impressing during his loan spell in Glasgow, the club haven’t put down the required money to get him out of his Boca Juniors contract, to the surprise and disappointment of the player himself.

It means that the champions of Scotland need to bring someone in to challenge Kieran Tierney, and that’s where Taylor comes into the picture.

Celtic shouldn’t be fearful of re-signing Greg Taylor

Taylor divided opinion amongst the Celtic Park fanbase, including then-manager Brendan Rodgers having to publicly defend him amid stick from the home crowd.

But you can never dwell on the past. Plus, Rodgers is no longer here, and Taylor would be playing a completely different role under Martin O’Neill if he were to re-sign.

You can bet your bottom dollar the 28-year-old wouldn’t be asked to come into midfield to dictate the game, as he did under Rodgers.

Either way, with Saracchi not returning, and it is a blow for the Hoops, another left-back needs to be signed this summer.

Yes, Tierney remains the main guy, but with his past injury record, you can’t expect him to play 90 minutes on top of 90 minutes next season.

Taylor’s Greek adventure hasn’t gone to plan because he isn’t even starting regularly, so rather than playing a squad role at PAOK, would he prefer to do that at Parkhead?

Given that he isn’t ruling it out, that should be a hint in itself.

Either way, with Celtic making a mess of this Saracchi deal, they shouldn’t be fearful of bringing Taylor back because that will be another player in the building who understands the club and how to win trophies.
