Celtic take on Hibernian on Sunday, in a game which sees Neil Lennon come up against the team he used to manage before returning to Celtic Park.
One player who will no doubt feature in the game is Hibs centre-back Ryan Porteous. The player, who is 21, was at the centre of attention after the recent Hibs vs Rangers game at Easter Road.
He wound up a number of the Rangers players which lead to some Celtic fans calling for the Hoops to sign him, as reported by 67HH.
For the most part those fans were not being serious. However, what is noteworthy are some recent comments about Porteous by Neil Lennon.
Lennon gave Porteous his Hibernian debut, and he lauded the qualities that the player has.
“At his age I think he’s got real good leadership qualities” Lennon said, as quoted by the Edinburgh News.
“A great temperament”
“He’s aggressive in the air and is a really good defender. It’s not surprising you’ve seen him do so well. I think he’s got a great temperament for the game” he concluded.
It’s not really a surprise to see Lennon praise a player that he gave a debut to so highly. He must have rated Porteous whilst at Hibernian to give him that chance.
However, what stuck out there were his comments about leadership. Lennon must feel that the player at such a young age can handle responsibilities.
You need leadership qualities to play for Hoops
Could that include playing for Celtic? You need to be a leader to play for the Hoops. You also need to have the ‘temperament’ that Lennon mentions.
At the moment, Celtic probably have no need to sign a centre-back. However, Shane Duffy is only at the club on loan, and there has been a lot of speculation about Kristoffer Ajer’s future at the club. Therefore, perhaps at the end of the season, the Hoops could be looking for another centre-back.
Lennon’s comments could suggest that the player is one that Celtic may consider a bid for in the future. Only time will tell on that front, but you can tell that he is a player that Neil Lennon really likes.
