Why a trophyless campaign might be the only way to force real change at an out-of-date Celtic

The torrential rain battering down on Glasgow as Celtic were losing to Hibernian on Sunday was a fitting image of the season so far.

Whether it’s Brendan Rodgers, Wilfried Nancy, or Martin O’Neill in the Celtic Park dugout, it has been rotten to the core.

It all blew up when Celtic got booted out of the Champions League by Kairat Almaty in August, as an already frustrated and angry fanbase went into overdrive.

Fast forward to the present, and even with the legendary O’Neill calling the shots, it’s the same old rubbish from the Hoops, as a trophyless campaign is probably what everyone deserves.

You are the Celtic manager. What do you change for the rest of the season? 🤨

Celtic deserve a trophyless campaign to get Dermot Desmond out

Many are talking about the importance of these next few months, from Celtic’s two trips to Ibrox, and also the post-split fixtures.

Added to the fact that Celtic are still in the Scottish Cup, so winning the double, just like last season, is well and truly on.

But if everyone is really honest with themselves, Celtic deserve to go trophyless this term because they have embarrassed themselves again and again.

Whether that’s senior players, such as Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate, playing like they are ready to leave now, Kasper Schmeichel’s continued mistakes, or strikers unable to score goals, it’s been beyond poor out on the pitch.

Then you have those running the ship from the boardroom. Yes, Peter Lawwell is out of the door, but the likes of Michael Nicholson and, most importantly, Dermot Desmond, remain.

For real change to happen, perhaps, just perhaps, Celtic going trophyless would be the biggest blessing in disguise because it would really highlight the mess the club is in, and force action to be taken.

Whether it’s the transfer windows or the performances in Europe, there is a dark cloud everywhere you look, and it’s going to take a lot to remove them.

The 2026 transfer window is still months away, but what is the number one position Celtic need to improve this summer?📝

Martin O’Neill is trying to unite Celtic

The fact that Celtic have only lost one domestic match under O’Neill’s two interim spells in charge this season is a testament to him and his backroom staff.

But let’s be honest, it’s papering over many, many cracks because the performances haven’t been great, and the team has relied on many, many late shows.

As the Celtic fan protests continue, and it has annoyed O’Neill at times, he is trying his best to unite everyone, including trying to bring back the Green Brigade.

But you sense he is just wasting his energy because until those at the top depart, Celtic won’t be able to move forward.
