‘Sensational’ Europa Conference League winner is perfect for Celtic, he could be free this summer

Celtic’s hunt to solve their fullback problem could be solved this summer should Brendan Rodgers take a look down at the English Premier League.

The Celtic manager was keen to add a left-back to his ranks after the recent injury to Greg Taylor forced Rodgers to turn to Alexandro Bernabei in January.

But now Taylor is back, Rodgers doesn’t need to worry about filling in that position for now. Well, at least until the summer.

It is widely accepted that Celtic must look to strengthen the left-back area of the team as that was one of the positions that was exploited by the opposition in this season’s Champions League campaign.

And whilst the January search to find the quality Rodgers so desires, the answer could lie within the West Ham ranks in the English Premier League.

West Ham United’s Ben Johnson could be excellent for Celtic

Johnson is a graduate of the West Ham academy and has been an important part of David Moyes’ first-team squad.

With 96 appearances for the Premier League side, the 24-year-old has faced some of the best attackers in the game.

Johnson was also an important part of Moyes’ Europa League-winning squad and whilst he was on the bench for the final, the versatile defender played six fixtures in that run where The Hammers were unbeaten against the likes of Anderlecht and Gent. [Transfermarkt]

Hailed by Stuart Pearce as ‘sensational‘ and one of ‘the best finishers’ in training at West Ham, it’s clear Johnson is really highly rated by the former England legend.

With just eleven appearances this season and out of contract at the end of June, Johnson could find the lure of Celtic and European football hard to turn down.

On a reported £20k-per-week [Spotrac] negotiating a salary won’t be an issue for Celtic.

Johnson is extremely versatile. He is capable of playing on both flanks of the defence and is an accomplished two-footed defender.

The 24-year-old can also slot into the midfield and has experience of playing at centre-back. He also has ten caps for England u21.
