Brendan Rodgers told he must drop ‘mad’ 23-year-old Celtic player to win the league

Brendan Rodgers has been told that he must drop Alexandro Bernabei if he wants to ensure the league title stays at Celtic Park.

The Hoops boss has deployed Alexandro Bernabei in place of the injured Greg Taylor and, to be fair to the Argentine, he has done reasonably well considering the lack of game time he has had over the past couple of seasons.

But now that Greg Taylor is back, Rodgers has been urged to drop Bernabei for the title run-in by footballer and pundit, Stephen McGinn.

McGinn said [The Go Radio Football Show], “It’s a good thing for Greg Taylor in terms of what he’s done, especially in those two years under Ange Postecoglou.

“But he’s now in a position where Celtic fans are getting a glimpse of him back in training and it’s a big thing for him.

“He’s been so consistent over the last couple of years and so reliable.

“Bernabei, he does some great things, he does some mad things and now we are at the run-in with 13 games to go there’s no place for mad things and Brendan Rodgers will be delighted to have Greg Taylor back and available.”

Alexandro Bernabei’s stalling Celtic career

The Argentine joined Celtic in a £3.75m move from Lanus back in 2022 and has struggled to displace an in-form Taylor.

Rumours that he could be up for an international call-up for Argentina last season emerged at the end of last season and Celtic fans could be forgiven for thinking they had a talent on their hands.

However, the youngster has made just 27 appearances in total and, this season, he has been used out of necessity rather than earning his place in the team.

Tipped to leave Celtic in January, the 23-year-old was, again, kept at the club out of necessity as the details of an injury to Greg Taylor emerged midway through the winter window.

There is a common theme emerging here. It wouldn’t surprise me if Bernabei was moved on in the summer.

As McGinn says, he lacks the consistency to be a fullback for Celtic and it is just a matter of time before a mistake, like the one at Aberdeen, could cost Rodgers dear as the title race comes to an end.
